First follow-up meeting in Paris of the 2010 NPT Review Conference
France will organize in Paris in 2011 the first follow-up meeting of the 2010 NPT Review Conference with the 5 nuclear powers recognized by the NPT : France, China, Russia, the United Kingdom, and the United States ("P5"). We announced this at the high-level meeting proposed by the UN Secretary-General on the sidelines of the General Assembly in New York ; the meeting aims to "revitalize the work of the Disarmament Conference and advance negotiations on multilateral disarmament".
The UN Secretary-General welcomed this initiative, which is supported by the 4 other nuclear powers recognized by the NPT.
This initiative demonstrates the determination of the P5 to continue to implement concrete actions aimed at ensuring full compliance with their obligations under the NPT.
The most recent NPT Review Conference in May allowed us to adopt by consensus pragmatic action plans to address the nuclear issue in a comprehensive and balanced way. Each State Party to the Treaty must now play its part in order to make progress towards creating a safer world. The P5 group is ready to assume its responsibility in this respect.
This P5 meeting falls within the principle of transparency promoted by President Sarkozy in Cherbourg in 2008. It will also follow on from the P5 Conference in London in September 2009, which allowed us to make progress with respect to transparency and trust-building measures.
